What it does

It knows what your computer is doing. So its advice is about your computer.

Most help you find online is generic, because whoever wrote it could not see your computer. The assistant can — which is the difference between “try clearing some space” and knowing which drive is full, what filled it, and clearing it for you.

01The assistant

Ask in your own words.

No menus to learn and no terminology to get right. Type what is happening the way you would say it to a person.

Assistant

    • My computer is slow
    • I am out of disk space
    • What are the specs on this computer?
    • Why does it take so long to start up?
Nothing changes until you say yes.

It answers using what it can see on the computer. If it can fix the problem, one click does it. If not, it takes you to the right Windows setting or shows you how with a short video.

02What it can do for you

The Fixes page: 14 fixes, one click each.

Where the fix is a known, safe one, the app does it rather than describing it. It lists the problems it finds, sorted by urgency.

    • Clear out temporary files to free up space
    • Empty the Recycle Bin
    • Clear Edge and Chrome's stored web files (keeps passwords and logins)
    • Fix websites that won't load after an internet hiccup
    • Stop a program from opening every time you sign in (can be undone)
    • Put back a startup program it turned off
    • Switch Windows' power setting, for speed or battery life (can be undone)
    • Stop a program that's misbehaving
    • Close programs that say "Not responding"
    • Bring back a frozen taskbar, Start menu or desktop
    • Repair an installed app without reinstalling it
    • Fix Microsoft Store apps that won't download or update
    • Run a quick Microsoft Defender virus scan
    • Get Microsoft Defender's latest virus updates now

Each one waits for your click. Nobody who is not sitting at the computer can start one.

    • Security check: whether your antivirus is on and up to date, and whether your firewall is on
    • Weekly reports: saved on your computer automatically, the last 12 kept
    • Help videos: short videos from Microsoft and PC makers, for problems the app can’t fix itself

    03What it can see

    What it can see.

Your computer’s hardware, how full the drives are, which programs use the most memory and processor, which apps connect to the internet, Windows error logs, and your security settings.

Not your files, your browsing history, your keystrokes or your screen.

    04The dashboard

Everything about this computer, on one screen.

A health check, hardware, storage, and a connection indicator.

When the computer cannot reach the internet, the local information still displays — which is exactly when you are most likely to be looking at it.

    05More than one computer

One list for every computer you look after.

Add the other computers in the house and each appears with its health score, whether it is protected, and when it was last seen.

Locked down from the first login.
